Hello everyone and yes its time for another cigar review with your buddy “Stew!” So pull up a chair, get comfortable with a favorite cigar, and sit back and relax! Before we begin, I would like to apologize for the recent shortage of reviews but life has been busy and will continue to be for quit some time but keep checking back because I promise you they will keep coming. Ok with that out of the way, lets get to todays review.
The cigar of choice today is the Defiance robusto cigar from the folks of Xikar. This cigar received a 91 rating by Cigar Insider and promises to be a smoke that you the consumer will not forget. With that kind of score behind it, why wouldn’t you want to get your hands on it.
A little history about this cigar taken directly from the Defiance Cigar Website: “The DEFIANCE™ cigar brand was created by Xikar in direct response to the ever-growing legislatively & tax based oppression of cigar smokers, retailers and manufacturers in the United States. The DEFIANCE™ brand will seek to unite cigar enthusiasts with a cigar brand whose bold identity & taste promotes the need for an equally bold resistance to the oppressive forces that attempt to destroy timeless traditions.” ~ written by the Xikar company http://www.defiancecigars.com/defiance_news.php
So with the history behind us, lets get right into this baby.
CIGAR MAKE UP:
WRAPPER: Cuban seed shade grown Criollo aged four years
BINDER & FILLER: Cuban seed grown corojo / Nicaraguan
Length/Ring: 5 X 50
Shape: The Renegade “robusto”
My Observations: The wrapper is awesome to look at due to its medium brown color which stands right out when your eyes make contact with it. The leaf itself has small non visible veins and has been rolled with pure confidence. The cap was centered perfectly and now I can see why this cigar has been drawing such a “buzz” in the cigar community. I can’t wait to light it up!
Cigar Label: True excellence! One look at this cigar label and you will be amazed. This label commands respect and attention and it shows in its artwork. The colors consist of red, black sliver, and white. I would like to give a big thumbs up to the creator of it!
Snip & Pre-Draw & Toasting: I used my cigar scissors for this task which was a true pleasure and I have no complaints to speak of. The pre-draw was outstanding and I immediately tasted a nice hint of dark chocolate. The toasting phase was pure heaven too as my cigar danced over my triple burner torch flame which produced a rich gray colored smoke that smelled magnificent.
Flavors: The 1st third of this cigar consisted of a rich coffee flavor paired together with a fruity type flavor and small quick hints of wood. The 2nd third consisted of rich coffee flavor which paired well with the hints of earth and wood. The final third continued with the woodsy flavor paired up with quick hints of caramel, earth, and some type of fruit flavor but I was not able to make what type of fruit it was.
Draw and burn line: Not much to say here but excellent on both avenues! The burn line was awesome and the draw line was excellent!
